Abstract

The Purpose of this study was to refine and develop the concept of empowerment. The hybrid model suggested by Schwartz-Barcott and Kim was used in this study. For the theoretical phase, literature was reviewed to analyze attributes and develop a working definition of the concept, empowerment. For the fieldwork phase, 3 captains and 3 majors in military participated. With the participants¡¯ permission, the data were collected by face to face interviews, dating from Aug. to Nov. 2002. The data analysis progressed at the same time as the fieldwork. Data analysis proceeded according to the analysis method of Straus and Corbin. Finally, a new definition of the empowerment was developed. According to the attributes identified from the theoretical and fieldwork phase, the final attributes of empowerment were suggested. ?To make people enhance self-confidence ?To make people have passion ?To make people have autonomy ?Process to make people grow The following final definition of empowerment was suggested. Empowerment is the process to make people enhance self-confidence, have passion and autonomy what they do, and grow in their life. The contribution of this study is to make an attempt concept development for clear understanding of the concept, empowerment using Hybrid model. Also the result of this study can provide a foundation for leaders to empower their members.
